2010 Bankruptcy Ontario Statistics Update

In 2010 a total of 66,935 residents of Ontario filed personal bankruptcy, or a consumer proposal.
Consumer bankruptcies decreased from 46,521 in 2009 to 33,000 in 2010 for an decrease of 29.1%. The number of consumer proposals filed in Ontario however had a significant increase, from 20,414in 2009 to 23,619 in 2010, an increase of 15.7%. Ontario’s overall decrease of 15.4% was comparable to the rate of decrease in Canada of 11%.
Why did personal bankruptcies drop, while consumer proposal filings increased? The bankruptcy rules changed in September 2009, making it more costly for some residents of Ontario to file bankruptcy. That made consumer proposals more attractive, so people who in the past may have filed bankruptcy chose instead to file a consumer proposal.
